Praslin Car Rental and Island Hopping: Book Each Island Separately

Updated: October 18, 2026 · Vrenty Car

An island-hopping holiday needs a transport plan for each island. Localrent's Seychelles rental conditions prohibit taking a vehicle off its home island, so arrange separate Mahe and Praslin rentals and travel between them as a passenger. Vrenty Car's guide explains how to connect the first return, the crossing or flight and the next collection without treating them as one continuous rental or assuming that a delay is automatically passed from one provider to another.

Draw the itinerary as separate transport blocks

Write down each island stay, its arrival point and its departure point. A typical structure might be an initial Mahe stay, a Praslin stay and a final night back on Mahe. Those are separate periods of car use, even when they belong to one holiday. Search Seychelles car rental for the period and island you actually need, and keep the confirmations clearly labelled so that the wrong collection details are not used after a crossing.

The home-island restriction is explicit. Do not plan to take the Mahe car to Praslin, look for a cargo workaround or assume a one-way fee changes the rule. The relevant decision is where to return the first car and how to collect another on the next island. This also avoids paying for a vehicle you cannot use while you are elsewhere. If a rental continues during a day trip, confirm its permitted parking arrangement and account for that unused time deliberately.

Choose the passenger connection before fixing handovers

Cat Cocos describes passenger services linking Mahe, Praslin and La Digue, while the official airport information identifies domestic flights between Mahe and Praslin. Compare the actual service for your travel date, baggage needs and arrival point. A timetable entry is not the whole connection: check ticket instructions, check-in requirements and what happens if the service changes. Do not use a car handover appointment as the only measure of how much transfer time you need.

For a ferry, account for reaching the terminal, unloading luggage and completing the operator's required check-in process. For a flight, follow the airline's current instructions and baggage allowance. These requirements belong to the passenger booking and may differ from your international flight. Keep enough flexibility that returning the first car does not require an unusually fast inspection. Arrange the rental appointments around the connection with margin, rather than fitting the passenger journey into the gap between two tightly scheduled cars.

Return the Mahe car at a confirmed location

If you want a ferry-area return, ask whether the selected supplier provides it for your booking and what exact meeting point applies. The presence of a port on the map does not establish a rental return service there. Confirm any charge and whether inspection is attended. If the supplier requires an office return, plan the onward transfer to the terminal and include luggage capacity. Do not leave the car in a public terminal area unless that is the agreed procedure.

For a domestic flight connection, distinguish the supplier's return point from the airline check-in location. An airport search does not guarantee that a particular car can be returned or collected at the terminal at your chosen time. The SEZ airport rental guide explains this eligibility check. Save directions and contact details offline. On the day, stop touring early enough to refuel and complete the return before you need to concentrate on the passenger journey.

Keep two suppliers and two bookings distinct

Even when both reservations use the same booking service, they can involve different rental companies and different collection rules. The first supplier does not necessarily know that your next car is waiting on Praslin. Keep separate booking references, assistance contacts, payment requirements and return instructions. Name each record by island and dates, and share the relevant one with the person driving. This is especially useful when somebody else has organised the holiday.

If the passenger service changes, update both rental arrangements as required. The Mahe supplier may need a later return or a different location; the Praslin supplier may need a revised arrival and collection time. A message to one does not notify the other. Obtain confirmation rather than treating an unanswered message as acceptance. Our booking policy guide explains changes and no-show risk, including why travel disruption does not automatically rewrite the conditions of a separate car reservation.

Specify the real Praslin arrival point

For ferry arrival, Baie Sainte Anne is the port area identified by the official tourism district guide. For an air arrival, use the Praslin airport arrangement offered by the supplier. These are different handovers. Select the correct point and request a precise meeting instruction, including whether you should call after retrieving luggage. A general Praslin location does not tell you where a representative will wait or whether a transfer to an office is required.

Check collection hours and any delivery charge for your selected service. If an arrival-point option is unavailable, compare a confirmed office or accommodation collection and the transfer needed to reach it. Give the supplier the relevant flight or ferry details when requested, while still keeping responsibility for reporting changes yourself. Do not assume live monitoring or an unlimited waiting period. Keep the contact channel accessible on the island and save the instructions before boarding the passenger service.

Pack for the crossing and the second car

Plan luggage capacity twice: for the passenger service and for the car awaiting you. A group may fit into the first rental but not a smaller second vehicle once all bags are loaded. Check the actual number and size of suitcases, equipment and child restraints. If you book a seven-seat layout, ask what space remains with every seat occupied. A transfer vehicle's capacity also matters when the supplier uses an office collection rather than meeting you at arrival.

Keep the documents needed for the second rental in your hand luggage, together with any required physical payment card. Do not bury them in a bag that will be checked or handled separately. Carry the voucher and payment clarification offline. Avoid assuming that an additional driver approved on Mahe is automatically approved on Praslin. The second supplier needs the correct driver details and documents under its own agreement before that person uses the vehicle.

Budget for overlapping security requirements

The first car's return does not guarantee that its deposit will be visibly available before the next collection. A card authorisation can take time to disappear from your bank's display after supplier action, while a collected deposit follows a different repayment process. Check both rental arrangements and plan sufficient funds for the overlap. Do not use the second handover as the deadline by which you assume the first bank transaction must be resolved.

Read the deposit and insurance guide for the distinction between deposit, excess and rental balance. If travelling without a credit card, confirm each offer independently using the payment-method guide. A cash-balance arrangement with one supplier does not establish that another accepts the same currency or card type. Keep receipts by booking so that any later question can be sent to the organisation responsible for that particular amount.

Plan Praslin outings from the base you choose

Think about where your accommodation sits relative to the places you want to visit and the arrival point. A car can be useful for independent stops and carrying day equipment, but it need not be rented for every day if your plans mainly involve the accommodation or boat excursions. Group nearby activities and check the actual public-road route before departure. Avoid copying a Mahe driving schedule onto Praslin merely because the rental process looks similar.

Vallee de Mai is one practical destination to research. The Seychelles Islands Foundation's official visitor page confirms a parking area and publishes current visitor arrangements. Check that page before setting the day, rather than relying on a remembered entrance time or fee. Allow for the visit itself, not only the drive. A later coastal stop should remain optional if the group wants longer at the reserve or the weather changes. Access and swimming conditions at a beach require separate checks.

Keep La Digue outside the car-transfer plan

If you include La Digue, arrange the passenger journey and local transport separately. The Praslin rental remains subject to its home-island restriction. Do not build a plan around taking it with you. For a day visit, decide whether retaining the Praslin car and parking it under an agreed arrangement is worthwhile, or whether returning it before departure better fits the itinerary. Confirm any port-area parking permission rather than assuming a ticket includes a place for the car.

For an overnight stay away from Praslin, compare the cost and practical implications of keeping an unused rental with a later new booking. The best answer depends on your return point, duration and supplier terms. Keep keys and documents secure, and do not leave valuables in a parked car. A passenger ticket, hotel reservation and car agreement are separate services; each needs its own change and cancellation check when you alter the island sequence.

Give the final connection a larger practical buffer

If you must reach an international departure on Mahe after leaving Praslin, evaluate the whole chain rather than just the scheduled passenger journey. Car return, baggage, check-in, weather and onward terminal movement all contribute. Follow the transport providers' current instructions and consider whether returning to Mahe earlier better fits your tolerance for disruption. This guide does not guarantee that any particular same-day connection is safe or protected.

When a ferry or flight changes, establish the revised passenger service first and then contact the affected rental supplier. Do not drive faster to compensate for a change outside your control. If the Praslin car needs to be returned later, request an extension and confirm where and how it will be accepted. If the next rental is no longer needed, use the formal cancellation channel promptly. Keep the response and reference rather than relying on a discussion with an unrelated representative.

  • Confirm the passenger ticket and its current check-in instructions.
  • Finish the first rental with enough time for inspection and onward transfer.
  • Keep the next supplier's contact and booking reference separate.
  • Notify every affected provider when the itinerary changes.
  • Treat deposit release and the next rental payment as independent transactions.

Use the car where it adds value to the island stay

Vrenty Car's independent guides help connect rental choices with the journey you intend to make. A useful Praslin booking has a confirmed arrival point, a vehicle that fits the group, acceptable payment terms and a return that leaves time for the next service. It should not depend on transporting the car between islands or on one provider automatically managing another provider's delay. Keep the plan modular enough that a change affects one booking clearly.

Before paying, read how it works and check the supplier-specific details for both islands. On arrival, inspect the second car as carefully as the first, even if the crossing has made the day feel long. Save the new condition report and assistance contact. A separate rental is a fresh handover with its own records; the familiarity gained on Mahe does not replace those checks. Once they are complete, keep the first Praslin drive straightforward and settle into the island stay.

Questions & answers

Can I take a Localrent-booked car from Mahe to Praslin?

The Seychelles rental conditions prohibit leaving the vehicle's home island. Plan separate rentals and passenger transport between islands. Do not treat finding a vessel or paying an additional transport charge as a way to bypass that contractual restriction.

Does a Praslin booking include collection at the ferry terminal?

Only if that specific offer and time permit the arrangement and it is confirmed. Select the correct arrival point, request exact instructions and check any delivery charge. An island-wide search result does not guarantee service at every port, airport or accommodation.

Who should I contact when my crossing is delayed?

Contact the passenger operator about the service and each affected rental supplier about its handover. Include the relevant reference and revised estimate. One message does not automatically update separate bookings, even when the cars were reserved through the same intermediary.

Can I skip the second vehicle inspection because the companies are related?

No. Record the actual car supplied on Praslin, its fuel level and existing condition, and keep that agreement separately. A new vehicle and rental period need their own handover evidence regardless of any relationship between the suppliers.
